4. Steps to take if you have a confirmed positive case of COVID:

Support Line for Farmer Wellness Now Live

GUELPH, Ont. (January 1, 2022) — A telehealth line to provide mental wellness support to all Ontario farmers and farm families is now live.

Through the Farmer Wellness Initiative, all farmers across Ontario and members of their farming family will have access to up to four free counselling sessions with a mental health professional. The mental health professionals have received training to understand the unique needs of Ontario farmers.

Accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in English and French, farmers can call 1-866-267-6255 to speak to a counsellor. Developed and launched by the Canadian Mental Health Association – Ontario Division in partnership with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, this service is provided by LifeWorks.

Ontario Cutting Wholesale Alcohol Prices to Support Restaurants and Bars

The Ontario government is supporting businesses impacted by the pandemic and continuing to provide choice and convenience for consumers by cutting LCBO wholesale prices for bars and restaurants, enabling curbside pickup of beer, wine and cider from licensed grocery stores, and freezing the basic beer tax rate.

The government is supporting bars, restaurants and other businesses with a licence to operate a liquor consumption premises by cutting wholesale prices for the alcohol they purchase from the LCBO, saving these businesses an effective 20 per cent when compared to retail prices. This change will provide approximately $60 million in annual support to restaurants, bars and other businesses.

“Our government knows that local restaurants and bars across Ontario have done their part to keep people safe by following public health measures. We’ve committed to helping these businesses, and that’s exactly what we’re doing today,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance. “A permanent wholesale discount will put about $60 million a year back into these important businesses, so they can invest in themselves and their workers.”

On-Farm Diversified Uses - Event Barns consultation

The Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance (GHFFA) is a partnership between the Regional Municipalities and Federation of Agriculture in Niagara, Peel, Halton, York, Durham and the Cities of Hamilton and Toronto as well as Conservation Authorities, the Greenbelt Fund, Durham College, Niagara College, the Holland Marsh Growers and various members of the food industry.  The GHFFA’s goal is to retain, enhance and expand the region as a globally renowned food and farming cluster (GHFFA, 2021). 
The GHFFA 2021- 2026 Vibrant Future Action Plan identifies the objective to develop short, plain 
language position papers to support the agri-food sector in the Golden Horseshoe.  This position paper 
explains the emerging development policies, regulations and processes aimed at establishing 
responsible event barns and answers the simple question: is it appropriate to establish event barns in 
Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe in particular?

Securing Fruit Policy coverage for Production Insurance

It's application and renewal time for the Production Insurance Fruit Policy. Now is the time to review coverage options to make sure they meet the current needs of the farm business for the year ahead. New customers can contact Agricorp to apply.

Last year, we shortened renewal notices, making it easier for customers to participate and select coverage. We are continuing to improve the renewal process to better serve our customers. Read more below.

Making coverage changes?
Going forward, fruit customers have until January 1 to make coverage changes, giving them more time to understand risks for the year ahead. (For 2022, we will accept coverage changes up until January 4, due to the statutory holiday.)

2022 premium rates and program coverage options are now available on Our adjusters are also available to help walk customers through their coverage options.

Premium deposit no longer required
Fruit customers are no longer required to pay a premium deposit – one less thing to do when securing coverage. Customers will receive an invoice for their full premium amount in the spring. Premiums are due May 1 (May 15 for strawberries).

Timing of 2022 renewals and more information
Fruit Policy renewal packages will be mailed later in December. If customers haven't already reported their 2021 final yield information, they need to follow up with their adjuster as soon as possible. Reporting yield is required before Agricorp can send the renewal package.

Full Fruit Policy information is available on has all the information needed to participate, including premium rates, important dates and other information about how the program works. Customers can simply select their commodity to find information and learn about any 2022 program updates for the commodities they grow.

Updates to the Enhanced Agri-Food Workplace Protection Program

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs

As of November 17, 2021, changes to the Enhanced Agri-food Workplace Protection Program will include: 

  • An extended application deadline to February 1, 2022, or until funding is fully allocated.  
  • Under the Workplace COVID-19 Prevention category:
    • An increased amount of cost-share funding for eligible expenses up to a total of $50,000 from the previous $15,000 maximum. The cost-share will continue to be 60% of the eligible expenses.
    • Expanded eligibilityto include food and beverage processors with three or more employees, agri-food industry organizations/associations, and poultry catchers/vaccinators and professional barn cleaners. 
  • Under the Responsive COVID-19 Outbreak Management category:
    • Expanded eligibility to include poultry catchers/vaccinators and professional barn cleaners. 
    • Expansion of eligible expensesto include extraordinary costs resulting from extended COVID-19 quarantine period beyond 14 days, accepted claims can date back to April 23, 2021. 

2021 Winery of the Year - Malivoire Wine Company

The Malivoire Wine Company, nestled among prime, maturing, sustainably farmed vineyards on Niagara’s Beamsville Bench, has been awarded “Winery of the Year” at the 2021 National Wine Awards of Canada (the 20th Anniversary of these awards). 

It is such a great outcome for a winery long beloved by Ontario wine enthusiasts as a go-to for bright, elegant and energetic wines that capture Niagara’s spirit. And among the winemaking community, few are as well-liked and respected as winemaker Shiraz Mottiar (and no, Shiraz is not a stage name). 

The victory is well earned. The incredible haul of 17 medals at the Nationals spans their repertoire, with Platinum medals for Le Coeur Gamay 2020Bisous Rosé Sparkling and a new red blend of cabernet franc and gamay called Analog Demo Series 2020 clinching the victory. 

Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Agriculture set the direction for the next agricultural framework

On November 11, 2021, Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) Ministers of Agriculture wrapped up their annual conference by issuing the “Guelph Statement”.

Ministers agreed on the sustainable agriculture approach needed to help shape the next policy framework, which includes environmental, social and economic considerations in all priority areas. The following five priority areas for the next framework: (1) climate change and the environment; (2) science, research and innovation; (3) market development and trade; (4) building sector capacity and growth; and (5) resiliency and public trust.  

Ministers also agreed to continue to improve the suite of business risk management (BRM) programs to make them timely, equitable, and easy to understand, while supporting the competitiveness and sustainability of the sector.

Additional progress was made during the conference on other key areas, including labour, African swine fever, Animal Health Canada, trade and market access, regulatory priorities (including interprovincial trade and the Canadian Plant Health Council), retail fees, and mental health.

Changes to Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019

The Government of Ontario has filed regulations to modernize Ontario’s beverage alcohol legal framework. The new legal framework will come into effect on November 29, 2021. Some of the key changes are outlined below:

  • A streamlined licence so that businesses typically have a single primary licence, with endorsements for additional activities.
  • All licensed grocery stores and wine boutiques are able to offer beer, wine and cider online, as applicable, for curbside pickup at the store.
  • All licensed grocery stores and wine boutiques are permitted added flexibility for other non-alcohol products, excluding energy drinks, and products that promote immoderate consumption, to be sold in the same contiguous aisles.
  • The temporarily extended retail hours of 7:00 am to 11:00 pm are made permanent for alcohol retailers.
  • Individuals involved in the sale, service or delivery of liquor who are required to hold an AGCO Board approved training certificate (i.e. Smart Serve) are required to recertify their training every five years, effective July 1, 2022.
